The Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems Specialty Systems Engineering Department has an immediate opening for a Staff Systems Safety Engineer with a strong working knowledge of systems / software development lifecycle, and/ or System/Software Safety responsible for System Safety Engineering and Airworthiness support, to provide the engineering team with application of safety policies and guidance. The candidate will join our System Safety Engineering team of qualified, diverse individuals. The position will be located in Melbourne, FL. Essential Responsibilities: * Applies knowledge, methodologies and principles of safety engineering as defined in MIL-STD-882E and the Joint Software System Safety Engineering Handbook * Establishes safety requirements for assigned systems * Independently analyzes and recommends safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards * Evaluates systems, associated support equipment and facilities, networks and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable safety specifications and standards * Mentors junior system safety engineers and collaborates with various design teams in the execution of various MIL-STD-882E analyses * Develop, review and approve safety artifacts in accordance with MIL-STD-882E * Support Airworthiness Certification IAW MIL-HDBK-516 * Reviews architecture, requirements and interface artifacts for complex software systems * Reviews Test Plans and Procedures for safety requirements verification and potential hazardous operations * Addresses safety in Model Based Engineering (MBE) environment * Perform hardware/ software safety using AGILE SW development Qualifications: Basic Qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 14+ years of system/ software safety engineering experience -OR-Master's Degree in STEM and 12+ years of system/ software safety engineering experience OR PhD in STEM and 9+ years of system/ software safety engineering experience * This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance as well as Program Special Access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs. * Expertise in System Safety and/or Software Safety hazard identification, adjudication processes, management of safety requirements and final risk acceptance. Preferred Qualifications: * Expertise applying System/Software Safety and Assurance Processes such as MIL-STD-882E, ARP4671, DO-178C/DO-254, the JSSSEH, IEEE1228, IEC 61508 * Strong working knowledge of flight test engineering, systems integration engineering, and software test engineering * Experience with Industry or DOD software assurance requirements, standards, manuals and handbooks, and assessing compliance with these products * Experience in Safety performance metrics and reporting * Ability to collaborate in and work in a team environment * Ability to prioritize and adjust tasks to accomplish the project result * Ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions * Prior military experience * Secret or Top Secret clearance Northrop Grumman is committed to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce.
