- Duties HelpDuties Summary The Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Directorate is seeking to hire an Aerospace Engineer in the Mission Assurance Branch (Code 383). As the Chief Safety and Mission Assurance Officer (CSO), you will lead and manage the development of a performance assurance program that includes reliability, hardware and software quality assurance, system safety and design review aspects of the project. As identical vacancies are identified, additional selections may be made. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities - As an Aerospace Engineer specializing in Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA), the Chief Safety and Mission Assurance Officer (CSO) will provide SMA leadership and technical authority for the project performance assurance program. - Serve as Project authority for project performance and quality assurance program activities. - Initiate investigations and studies to prove or disprove contractor's design and implementation criteria and to find risks and risk mitigations associated with critical problems in design, fabrication, assembly, integration and test operations. - You will delegate quality assurance functions to Government Inspection Agencies (GIA) at project contractors' and suppliers' facilities. - You will serve as a member of the project Configuration Control Board; design review teams; - investigation committees which evaluate flight hardware modification, design, and failures to meet performance requirements; and serve as the chairperson of the Project Malfunction Report Review team. - Make technical presentations on behalf of project management, to NASA Headquarters personnel, contractors, and other government representatives. - Make programmatic and technical presentations to SMA Directorate managers on status, issues and important recommendations associated with technical authority. - You will serve as the recognized authority in performance assurance, and publish/present related data in an international forum. - You will provide overall SMA leadership to the supporting SMA discipline experts providing technical and programmatic insight that enables them to produce effective and value added analyses and recommendations. - You will be responsible for software and hardware systems including Electrical/Electronic/Electromechanical (EEE) parts as well as materials and processes used in flight systems or instruments. - In addition, you will serve as an authoritative source of information for decisions and guidance concerning changes in program objectives relating to the performance assurance management of the total project effort. Specialized experience at the GS-15 level is defined as (1) providing technical expertise on project performance assurance activities (2) evaluate flight hardware modification, design, and failure to meet performance requirements (3) providing technical authority in fabrication, assembly, integration and test operations for hardware and software. If you have received a degree in Computer Science, you MUST list all courses you have taken which meet the education requirements as stated in the qualification requirements section as well as the semester hours awarded. Education Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
